Sacral Pain

 

The Sacrum (Latin os sacrum) is a large triangular-shaped bone at the base of the spine, forms the upper rear portion of the pelvis, like a wedge located between two of the pelvic bones. There are 5 sacral vertebrae when you are born and fuse together as you age forming 1 bone. Nerves pass through the sacrum that form nerves that pass down the lower extremities as well as nerves that supply pelvic organs with nerve innervation. Sacrum pain is very common and the cause can be from a variety of issues ranging from sitting for extended periods of time to an injury to the area.

The body reacts to this by instructing the muscles to tighten up to prevent more damage but this muscle spasm tends to last for longer than it is useful, resulting in more pain.

What Causes Sacral Pain?

The sacral spine plays a pivotal role in supporting the upper body while connecting it to the lower body. It is positioned between the hipbones and stabilizes the entire pelvic girdle. The nerves from the sacral spine support the pelvic organs and the lower extremities of the body. They supply the buttocks, legs, ankles, feet, toes, reproductive organs, bladder, and the prostrate gland.

The 5 vertebrae comprising the sacral spine are also referred to as the sacrum. The sacrum is a triangular shaped bone, containing the vertebrae of the sacral spine, and joins the ilium (hipbones) at the sacroiliac joints. Pain at the sacroiliac joints is a common pain to the sacral spine.

Sacroiliac joint pain comes from joint dysfunction / misalignment which leads to inflammation, nerve irritation, or subluxations (misalignments) that can cause nerve compression and interference. This pain can be felt in the hip joints, lower back, or even your buttocks or groin.
